Character Chat: Commitment Book Recommendations for Middler Schoolers

Summer! What a great time to sit by the pool or be outside with a good book! And what better than to encourage your child to read a book about having good character such as the book:

When the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin.

A fantasy story of a young girl named Mini who lives in a ramshackle hut with her parents in the valley of the Fruitless Mountain. At night her father tells her the folk tale of the Old Man in the Moon, who knows the answers to all of life's questions.

Mini begins a journey to find the Old Man in the Moon to have him tell her how she can change her family's fortune. Along her extraordinary journey, she encounters a cast of characters and magical creatures. Including Jade Dragon who accompanies her on her quest. A wonderful story of adventure and friendship.

Andres and His Rubik's Cube by Andrea Alvarez.

The story of Andres who after seeing the new kid in the neighborhood solve a Rubik's cube super-fast, wonders if he could learn to do it just as fast if not faster. He tries but it seems impossible until his mother encourages him to practice every day. As he does, he learns about a Rubik's cube contest, and he's inspired to try to win.

This story is based on the true story of a boy who practiced hard and learned hundreds of algorithms to solve the Rubik's cube in lightning speed. A boy who never gave up on his goal to master the Rubik's cube. (A bonus to this story would be to give your child a Rubik's cube to master for themselves and in the process teach a lesson about commitment!)

Happy Reading!!
